Montrose Sub Aqua club was founded in 1972 and has members from across Angus and the Mearns. Membership numbers vary slightly from year to year but normally sit at around 40.
From October to April the club meets on a Monday night in Forfar
. We assemble in the Forfar community campus for classroom sessions at 18:45 for a 19:00 start in the main classroom. Thereafter, pool training is held in the Forfar community campus pool from 8.00pm.
The club has a number of fully qualified BSAC instructors and several sets of kit for use in the pool training sessions. New trainees are, however, encouraged to begin putting together their own kit with a view to being fully equipped by the time open water sessions begin in March/April depending on weather.
BSAC Ocean Diver – the Club provides first level training to BSAC Ocean Diver standard. Initial training consists of theory and pool based sessions lasting about 10 weeks and includes written and practical assessments. This is followed by open water training commencing March/April.
Ongoing training – the Club also trains members to Sports Diver and Dive Leader levels within the Branch. Further training is on offer through BSAC to Advanced Diver and Instructor levels
The Club owns a boatshed and bothy at Catterline, north of Inverbervie. Diving takes place here throughout the Summer on Wednesday evenings and Sundays.
There are three inflatable boats kept in the boatshed at Catterline which are used for club dives. A small fee (currently £3 per dive) is levied to cover maintenance and fuel costs. The Club also has a RIB which is used for dive trips further afield (£5 per dive plus a share of fuel and towing costs).
Air fills can be provided after diving from the Club Compressor (currently £2.50 per fill).
The Club dives every Wednesday evening at Catterline, weather permitting. We also dive there on Sundays if no ‘away’ trips are planned.
There is a full programme of dives over the summer. There are local dives off Montrose and Arbroath, day trips to various sites on the East coast such as Rosehearty and weekend trips further afield to various sites like Oban, Mallaig, Sound of Mull etc.
